The crow's eyes glow if you use the latern effect around it, I'd guess it's meant to be the eyes reflecting the light.

I'm probably not remembering this correctly, but you actually come OUT of that door from another area. I think. I don't even remember how I got there - it was a LONG time ago and with an older version so it could very well be different by now.
