Small, insignificant theory.

There are theories of Poniko being a friend to Madotsuki, that was killed in an accident. So, Uboa could be a grayscale (simplified to two tone) photo of Poniko's mangled face, like a post-mortem photo. ALSO when you use the lightswitch there's a flash, like a camera flash.

I'm not very sure, i only started playing YN a while ago, i haven't actually encountered Uboa yet.

That was longer than expected.

I've been playing around with the theory of Poniko being a drown victim, possibly murdered, judging from Uboa's face.

To get to Poniko, you need to go into a pool of water from the snow world, travel through some more water to get to her... House? Castle? And when Uboa teleports you, Uboa is underneath you and you're walking in what sounds like water.

The giant... Thing in the background (Seriously, does that thing have a name?) could be a distorted view of the murderer.

the problem with this theory is that it omits the lightswitch, balloons and the house/castle/whatever itself. Your idea of a camera flashing is a good explanation, although it leaves me to wonder why would kikiyama make the lightswitch represent a cameraflash when he could have just made a camera effect that Poniko reacts to, much like Monoko and the stoplight.

On another note, It's a shame there aren't that many theories about that... thing. I feel it's one of the most interesting things in YN besides the Severed head area (Not the heads themselves, although they're interesting too)

Let's get back on track. I've pulled from my ass a theory of what the 'thing' in the background is. Assuming it isn't a murderer like you say.

Say Poniko was hit by a vehicle in full view of Mado, encountering this 'photo' brings back memories of the accident, the thing is a distorted mental snapshot of Poniko: blood pouring from the mouth, disfigured limbs, bloodshot eyes.
And the big red blob on it's head is blood, either seeping from Poniko's head or a mark from when she landed and rolled or slid.

my theory is maybe Poniko had been playing around in the snow and fell in the ice and died of hypothermia, which is why you can get to her house from the snow world, and maybe Yuki-Onna was a friend of theirs that had been with Poniko at the time, and couldn't help Poniko, so she was pacing around waiting for someone to try and help, and i think Uboa is a distorted image of her face when they saw her body afterwards, and that the noise Uboa makes is the sound either Poniko made when she fell in, or Madotsuki made when she saw her friends face
