We need an underwater treasure cave that is on fire.
or a fire cave on water...wait
or a fire cave on water
...wait
Perhaps one could be accessible through my theme park area?
There have to be Squid and Octopus. The Squid kill the octopus when they get to close though.

Drowning is a pretty common nightmare theme that a lot of people get. Perhaps some kind of abstract deep-sea branch of the underwater area? Lots of eyes, lights, and perhaps a mindfuck or two. Sinking corpses, nautical mines, shark attacks.
Color-changing invertebrates like squid and octopi would be pretty cool
If there's going to be an underwater area, we need some sort of Cthulu-esque mindfuck. Not even necessarily resembling Cthulu, just some sort of ELDRITCH BEAST LYING BENEATH THE WAVES
Some sort of surreal eldritch sea monster would be epic. We could have some process for waking it up and sending you to its stomach or some creepy outer realm, a la Toriningen/Uboa dead-ends. What would such a Dali-Lovecraft sea monster look like, do you think?
>>85How about the route inside it is a tunnel filled with crystalline, teeth-like growths? I think that might be really cool. Also, I hate to get on the whole SQUIDS LOL train, but I think any undersea nightmare would be incomplete without tentacles. Also:>>Sinking corpsesLet's have a Sky Garden staircase allusion, but it's underwater and there's a random chance of there being a sinking corpse instead of a falling... whatever.Edit: My name is Kamisori. My name is not Kazenori. I really hope I do not make this mistake more than once. Last edited 09/08/08(Sat)03:10.

I think both 2kki and .flow have a general "underwater" area:http://uboachan.net/fg/src/1245105207781.pngand about 5 minutes into this videohttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKk8Iad3tIAbut I think an deep-sea, like abyssal zone area would be better lol, plus these: >>82 >>83 >>85 >>86 are awesome ideas. How about some anglerfish-like things?
How will the Lovecraftian nightmare creature be presented? I was thinking something like in this picture, where one room is nothing but an undersea cliff. If the fire hair effect is activated (and possibly other switches, or maybe it's just random), the monster becomes visible. And then it eats you.Of course I don't know what the monster will end up looking like, so I'm not sure if this will work.

>>86>>90The staircase could be going downward while the background gets progressively darker. Also, anglerfish would be awesome, especially in the darkest areas.

>>37Perhaps there could be some event triggering Kazenori to wake up, having wet the bed?
I randomly started doodling that sinking corpses idea...
... and also a random underwater creature. When I was drawing it I thought if it like a tumor / cancer. It slowly grows outward and eats fish or anything that swims too close. I feel like there would be something inside it, like it's "heart" (which could look like anything) as a weak point... If you don't manage to kill it the next time you return to this area it'll be a lot bigger? That and if this dream is from another patient (Nori is still visiting other people's dreams right?) maybe the patient dies from cancer or something else IRL if you don't do anything about it...I'll stop rambling, but here's some more random ideas.

>>117>>118I really really like both of these ideas and the illustrations are very nice, I think we should include them. But what kind of area would the large tumor creature be in? A cave-type thing or open water?>Nori is still visiting other people's dreams right?no, this was taken out.

no, this was taken out.
This is what I kind of envisioned. As you descend in the sea, light gets dimmer and dimmer. But in the abyss, we could have total darkness with little beacons that reveal the anglerfish-horrors that they're attached to when touched. Then, in the deep sea, you could find some sort of trench with the Coral-Squid-Cancer in it. Whether or not it transports you or eats you is up to everyone else. The stomach could be a series of small "digested" versions of other dreamworlds linked by gross tunnels (chewed-up hospital, melted Vegas, scraps of crayon world).I'm still not really sure if this is the dreamy kind of visuals we should use for a YN-esque game, but it's very cool nevertheless. In any case, Cthulhu dreams all the time so this links to the theme in a vague sense.

Maybe the cancer coral is also an angler? I'm working on a version with more lighting / detail atm. Plus some interior sketches. >>119>no, this was taken out.:C Aw, I kind of liked that idea. Maybe if he approaches one of the patients he dreams about them? Idk... But I would love to more disease-inspired monsters. (Though admittedly this guy is really vague XD)Hm... I'll try to make this guy look more underwater themed... but maybe one of the paths leads above water. Put him anywhere you like, really.

IT'S A TRAP!This is leaning way towards an angler then the coral... maybe the eyes should be more mouths instead? Last edited 10/05/14(Fri)19:56.

>>120this. it's pretty much what i was also thinking of for the general area.>>123yeah, i actually liked >>118 a lot more for the tumor creature, it looked really cool and was more brix, less general monster-like. but that one's also p. cool, it's what i could imagine for the anglerfish monsters.

Here's a general concept bg for inside the tumor guy. Not sure on colors just yet...But there's multiple entrances leading you to potentially different areas.I love this anon's idea >>120 that there's half digested places inside.>>124Yeah, I liked that one better as well... :/ I think I'm going to say those last two drawings are for the angler idea.

>>123Well, thanks. I just spent the last ten minutes switching back and forth between those two pictures like a flip book.D: I'm so easily amused.
The whole thing might reflect the fear of cancer. Kazenori is stuck in a hospital and already has epileptic fits, perhaps there's a constant, nagging fear of cancer eating his brain, hence digested worlds and teratoma mouths gnashing here and there. Of course, he doesn't have it, but cancer-paranoia is pretty prevalent in the American psyche.
>>142I bet there's a couple cancer patients already in the hospital..Hm... maybe Kazenori is a hypochondriac? It would be interesting to see several different diseases that he's scared of showing up in his dreams. The Tokyo / cityworld is already said to be based on epilepsy fears (bright lights everywhere), so maybe the underwater world having a few cancer related imagery? Maybe the Crayon World could be childhood schizophrenia / fears of loosing sanity /etc... Last edited 09/10/30(Fri)12:59.

>>143let's just make worlds and areas etc without thinking about lolsymbolism for nowwe can have the players come up with theories about wat it all meens when we actually have a game to release
>>144It's nice to have a theory behind something so you know what characters / creatures / scenarios to design next, but yeah you're right. D: This game doesn't have to make any sense whatsoever.

We shouldn't dig too deep, I agree. But I do rather like the hypochondriac idea. Different worlds being inspired by different illnesses can help us flesh out other worlds better.

here have a crappy concept drawingiirc we were discussing the >>118 cancer dude and came up with the idea that through some door in his insides there could be a random kitchen with an uninteractable lady facing away from you, making tea. possibly there could be a hallway going somewhere else.while a was drawing the concept for it i had an idea: the hallway could lead to a very dark dead end, so your only option is to go back. when you reenter the kitchen area, the cancer/tumors could have spread throughout the area. the lady's corpse is on the floor covered in the tumory stuff and the table is set with the tea. it doesn't mean anything, just some idea i had that could give some depth to the area.what do you think guys
>>153I suggested the kitchen and tea making wife but this is a lot better. Things turning cancery and having the tea be ready afterwards is a nice touch. I really hope this ends up in the game / FUND IT! Much brix would be shat if I didn't expect this event.

>>153Excellent. One of my favorite things in YN is turning around to find things weren't as they were before, a la the Sky Garden/Uterus Tunnel.

I drew another random idea for an area inside the cancer, or just something aquatic themed. Mostly just lolrandom with colorful jellyfish.
And here's the plain background.
>>721Doorway reminds me of Vagina Dentata. We could also go with that theme. Does the monster actually effect the worlds he's gobbling? Like, do you see the worlds getting smaller and smaller until you kill it?
Maybe some sort of benevolent dream whale critter floating aabout.
Would it be possible for the underwater area to be a place which you can't reach from ordinary doors; instead, an NPC teleports you there?Because, idea: Player is near a body of water which has something (animal, humanoid, whatever) floating in it. Player steps closer to the shore, and the floating object moves nearer... and, if the player doesn't move back, pulls him in.

I also drew a rough idea of the cancer / heart area awhile back and didn't bother to post it. I need to redesign the monster at some point. :/

Just a thought regarding the NPCs, I'm thinking that the designs should be based off of stuff like the Burgess Shale creatures, real pre-historic stuff that has no surviving evolutionary descendants... Sorta like the stuff in this link here: http://paleobiology.si.edu/burgess/burgessSpecimens.htmland the Tribrachidium: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tribrachidium
