I had previously made this thread on 4chan's /r9k/, but I thought I would remake it here.

MOSTLY CREEPY INDIE GAME SHARE THREAD! Please use this thread to post game links with included gameplay footage only. Save discussion for other threads as much as possible. A lot of these have already been posted somewhere on /og/, but it would be nice to have a bunch of game DL's in one thread. So LETS DO THIS THANG

The Baron

>Text adventure/interactive fiction

From gamesradar.com:
"(...) The Baron is an average text adventure about a man battling a dragon, who eventually faces an evil baron who’s kidnapped his daughter. But the dawning realization that something’s not all that it seems, before one final sucker-punch moment which presents you with a flabbergastingly unpleasant choice, makes this game memorable for the most disturbing of reasons."

I eventually figured out how to move around a bit there; it's the most game-like of those five. Then some kind of fish-head appeared and the confetti became even more obstructive before the program closed itself. The other ones are filled with messages of varying levels of preachiness and pedantry, with no real gameplay apart from a single simple maze and some bible-throwing. Pass.

If we're bringing YN into this, my problem isn't with La La Land's relative lack of structure compared to Madotsuki's dreams. It's with how thickly they lay on their particular messages and how the games only consist of moving left and right. It isn't that YN is easier to follow, but at least it's more of a "game" than LLL.

In fact, visuals aside, LLL seems like less of a fever-induced clusterfuck than YN since YN isn't clearly trying to say anything and LLL (2, 3, and 5 in particular) is.

so I think icepick counts as indie enough

I want to mention this game because it is almost the polar opposite of Yume Nikki

It has complicated mechanics with resource management and boss fights
It has high-level production in terms of 3d art and voice acting (really fucking good voice acting and dialog i might add)
much of the plot is speculated on by the game iteself
lots of dialog and bizarre characters

and yet it feels bleak, artistic, and horrific in the same way

if you don't feel like playing this, there's a really fucking great lp of it

Id like to say when it says One Chance, it really means you only have one chance. Theres multiple endings, but once you reach the end of one, you cant play the game over. I'm sure you can get around it though, I tried myself but I must have done it wrong, it wouldnt let me.

might get some flak for this but
the meaning behind some of these games is REALLY lost to me

specifically Au Sable and All of Our Friends Are Dead
the creators of the game really fail in their obligation to deliver a coherent and cohesive story, and the gameplay isn't rewarding enough to make playing the game worthwhile.

You might feel like some of these games are really thought-provoking and deeper than what you normally see in the gaming community, but in reality they just communicate a jarbled mess of creepy tropes while surrounding the player in a vaguely creepy atmosphere.

Summary: im buttDEVAZTATUD that i sat through these games and found no resolution in any sense of the word; what you might mistake for artistic genius and legitimate story-telling is really just amateur babbling in an attempt to be seen as critical and emotionally stirring

I have an argument for you, but this thread isn't the place for that... Oh, fuck the police, let me get this off my chest:

These sort of games are left to be... open to interpretation. Just because you don't "get it" doesn't mean it's bad.

>specifically Au Sable and All of Our Friends Are Dead, the creators of the game really fail in their obligation to deliver a coherent and cohesive story, and the gameplay isn't rewarding enough to make playing the game worthwhile.

There's a story for each, but you can barely pick it up, and again, most of it is supposed to be left to interpretation. Indie games are like that.

I think that AOOFAD is about a man who has lost everything, and in an attempt to make something of his life he tries to find his friends and possibly some family. He is unsuccessful and... kind of just, repeats the cycle I guess? Trying to find survivors. He looks like a solider to me. I think the text that appears randomly... is possibly his lack of sanity rearing it's ugly head from the deep dark pit of his mind.

I also think that Au Sable is about a girl finding her twin sister. Some text in-game, ("Harmonia where are you" and "I have been with you since the womb") kind of hint at that. Depending on the ending you get... she's successful, or unsuccessful. Both endings have a bittersweet feel.

But that's all just my thoughts on the storylines.

Basically, it doesn't have to really make sense to be creepy and that's all they wanted to do. Make a creepy game. It's not... OBLIGATED to make sense. Think of it as the polite ramblings of a psychopath in his cell. It's creepy but it doesn't make any sense.

polite sage for being off-topic
