I've been meaning to make a Sound Horizon thread for days, might as well do it now. Their music is really hard to classify. I guess you'd call it symphonic rock or maybe art rock if you want to sound pretentious, with the main guy Revo composing the tracks, writing the stories and providing vocals. I think he does instruments sometimes but I'm not sure. Most of the band are like fill-ins, Revo is the only permanent member though some like Jimang (known for the Umineko no Naku Koro ni ED song (OHHH DESIRE)) have a spot on every album since their introduction. To quote their last.fm page: >Their music is generally in omnibus style; an album contains multiple parts with different themes that create one long, coherent story. Both male and female vocals are utilized, with soprano and mezzo-soprano vocals being the most common. Usage of narration is not restrained and can be heard in a variety of languages including French, Spanish, Arabic, Russian, German and English. This narration is often reminiscent of anime due to the frequent involvement of seiyū in narrating positions after the band’s major record label debut. Various musical stylistic influences are also apparent in their music including progressive rock, jazz, pop, opera, classical, and heavy metal. Their lyrics are often mysterious and metaphorical and contain complex and fantastical themes varying from ancient curses, legends, mythology, dreams, war and paradise to lust, longing, obsession, crime, and death. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xhbATKOQsA This is an unofficial music video for Stardust, from Elysion ~楽園幻想物語組曲~, one of my favourite songs from one of my favourite albums. Entirely fan-made, apparently! Sound Horizon fans are classy. Interested? http://junshibuyablog.wordpress.com/2009/12/07/sound-horizon/ Here are links to practically all of their works. I recommend their 4th and 5th Story CDs, Elysion ~楽園幻想物語組曲~ and Roman but honestly it's all quite good. Chronicle is mostly instrumental, it's a nice album but it's missing a whole dimension without the vocals. Certainly not a great place to start. http://www.last.fm/music/Sound+Horizon Their last.fm page, since I know lots of uboachanners use last.fm Enjoy! |
