Name : Yume Quikki
Platform : PC / RPG Maker VX
Website : http://3ns.moofah.com/yume-quikki

Old Project : http://uboachan.net/fg/res/5503.xhtml

My, my ... it would appear that the summer is heating up with projects. As I feel that I am beginning to close in on chapter zero of my newest project, I'll lay down some tidbits of information and some screen shots. This game will be an eclectic mix of a parody, scripting laboratory and artistic experiment as no tilesets will be used in the creation of the game.

[ "What's with the name?" ]
Since I began my other project, 'Somnolence', I always found myself unable to keep excited and on task about putting Yume Nikki fan game. I came to the conclusion that I disliked trying to keep the project in a 'serious' mindset and always began to deviate into the light-hearted realm.

Over the course of the last few months I've been exploring new ideas to make the game as fun to play as it was to create. What I decided on was building a parody fan game that poked fun at the very series that I liked.

I came up with the name 'Yume Quikki' to emphasize the fact that I wanted the game short, but detailed, fun and humorous ... or at the very least, silly with a slight de-emphasis on graphics. I figured that the Japanese can't have all of the fun with puns on the name of the original.

< Game Story >
The dream world has seen a huge rise in violence against its denizens over the past seven years and finally the cries for more security measures has been answered. In an attempt to try and curb the blatant assaults upon the population at large (and occasionally small), the Majestic Dream Authority have created a prison to lock away offenders within the vast White Desert. This compound is kept secure by hundreds of Dave Spectors and occasionally Officer Takofuusen for aerial reconnaissance or just whenever it feels like floating around.

Already the program has been highly successful and the dream bullying has begun to decrease, although the prisoners are now beginning to secretly carve out a dream underworld. Soon someone will need to lead these brutal ruffians, but for now the seat of a Dream Godfather goes unfilled.

You begin play as Jeslyn, an eighteen year old who works at Rodney's Door-porium selling doors. However, this small town job tends to get quite boring and she often naps or daydreams, taking out her boredom upon the people of the dream world. She could not have known that she would be the target of an undercover sting operation by the MDA, causing her to enter a trapped door to follow her intended prey only to be funneled into the White Desert prison.

Since the special prison nullifies the use Effects, Jeslyn can no longer wake up nor run away; she is trapped until she can find a way out.

< Current Features >
= Game =

  • Pseudo-3D Areas
  • Small Areas
  • As nearly all Effects are nullified and banned within the compound, less powerful Attire and Curio (Equipment and Items) are used by the inmates. This is a nod to some fan games which leave in the Equip and Items menu items.
  • Unique Challenges to Overcome to Gain Items/Equipment or Effects
  • Some Attire and Curio are purchasable from vending machines. The currency will be how many steps you have taken. Steps will decrease after you spend them.

= System =

  • Portable (No RTP Required)
  • Scalable Window (640x480, 800x600, 1024x768)

< Currently Looking For ... >

  • Humorous ideas or things to poke fun at. I already have several things laid out, although I have a one-track mind when I get into doing graphics and scripting and so ideas to get my gears turning would be great.
  • Voice-over for the main menu.

An early work in progress of the prison compound area. Technically this could be considered the hub for the game, although later on it will most likely not be used as much.

I am sensing promise in this game.
Continue.

Is it just going to be referencing/parodying yn? Or are you going to include bits from other games?

>> No.7430   [Delete]   [Edit]

I thought it was going to be a satire towards fan games and how they overuse things but I like this idea as well.
If she can't wake up how does she save?

I will try to reference multiple games, although as I have the most experience playing Yume Nikki much of the content will be centered around that game unless others make suggestions or offer some ideas.

Later on, I'll play through some other fan games to try and nab some inspiration. For now I think I have enough content for the first release, at least.

The game will be somewhat of a satire on how certain things are overused in fan games, although it will also be a semi-serious attempt to add in new ideas. It's basically a random glob of parody, art and inspiration poured into a single project.

Save items will be purchased from vending machines in exchange for a small amount of steps. The player can then expend the item and save their game. Later on, I'm thinking about including a non-expendable item for a large amount of steps so that saving can be done at any time. The items and equipment are still in flux at this point, but I'll get it hammered out here soon.

Sounds pretty funny. Maybe you can show some mock-protagonists desperately trying to wake up, pinching their cheeks til they bleed or even a failed attempt at transplanting a hand/arm to replace someone's head (like Medamaude). Kind of like the reception scene in Beetlejuice, except in jail.

So what the hell is a Qukki?

Hehe, yeah, that idea of including desperate attempts to use unusable effects would be fun.

Hmm, it's supposed to come across as 'Quickie', as in the time that it takes for me to create an area as well as how long it takes to complete the area. I suppose I should probably add an 'i' in there so it will be read as 'Quikki'. It sounded right to me at the time, but now that I look at it again, it seems a little odd.

I DEFINITELY would like to see .flow references.

Also, if you can, you have GOT to make fun of the fact that almost every fangame creator likes to include at least one gigantic void with a picture scrolling in the background for no reason other than the fact that Yume Nikki has a lot of them. Also a Toriningen clone is absolutely necessary.

Mm, I've been trying to keep map sizes to one screen per area, but I might throw in a 500x500 square map (32 pixels per square; 16,000 by 16,000 pixel screen) with one sole NPC in it just for fun. Not sure, we'll see. I'll work something out to include the most offending map problems that are typically included with fan games.

I'll work in a few .flow references, although I don't have much experience with the game. I think I have a few cameos squared away as well as a few areas in mind, we'll see how it goes.

Toriningen are pretty much a given and they'll most certainly be making an appearance. I've been slowly working on their sprites since the beginning on this project.

Obligatory Uboa and Kalimba events?

I am a bit confused on where the story is going, is Jeslyn just trying to get out of the prison or free the prisoners...? Or is she a puppet for the prisoners or MDA?

Yeapper, I have something worked out for Kalimba and Uboa will also be making an appearance as well.

She's trying to escape.
