Hi Uboachan. Just thought i'd drop by with a game im working on. The basic premise is that basically you're a earthling escaping from earth since it's no longer habitable, kind of unoriginal at first, but it gets better. Planet is hostile, in fact so hostile that the weakling humans can't live there! So in order to survive in at least some manner, they bio-engineer a (somewhat) human that they believe can survive on the new planet. And that's all the story i'll tell for now.

The idea for this game is something i got when i read two books by by the Scottish geologist and author, Dougal Dixon. The books in question is: "After Man: A Zoology of the Future" and "Man After Man: An Anthropology of the Future". I highly recommend them if you're into sci-fi or are interested in how humanity could end up in the future.

Also the pictures i use here are from the book.

While I do enjoy the game so far, there's a few nitpicks I have that you could improve on.

Firstly would be the intro scene. It's long and drawn out, which I understand because you're trying to convey the emptiness of space, but you stretched out the words as well. When I saw "Music" I thought you forgot to add in the composers, and then when I saw "Strange space" and "Solaris" floating by, I thought you were labeling things in the background. I think the intro would be better if you had all the categories and names within together, with the large gaps of space between them, instead of having them stretched out like that.

Secondly, the introduction of dialogue. It's a great thing, but with the ability to examine a few things (Frozen food, shelves in storage), you give the player the desire to examine everything. I think there'd be a better understanding and immersion with this game if we could know what it is we're looking at. The biggest offender would be those four legged things in the hallways.

Also with the dialogue, there's a few uncapitalized Is ruing around. Grammar nazi and whatnot.

Those are just micro errors though, you've got a very promising macro and I'm very excited to see further developments!

Haha i guess you're right about the intro, i'll do something about it.

Also bout' the four legged thingies and whatnot, good point, i'll do something about this to.
And the I's shall be large.

Glad you liked it overall at least, i was unsure wether this was worth putting out or not.

Bump for progress?

Also, if you don't mind me asking: what I'm supposed to do when I go down the lift and then the worm-looking things start flooding in? I tried pushing the buttons and running away, but neither worked.

Progress is being made, although lately it have been slowly since i have been having tons of other stuff to do. Next week my break starts and i have pretty much zero stuff planned for that so i will perhaps release something in a few weeks if people would be interested in it. Suggestions are welcome.

About the "worm-looking things". You are supposed to press the buttons in a specific order.

Ok so i may have said that it's jungle time, if so, i lied. The ship got a bit bigger than i initially planned since i got alot of stuff i wanted to cram in. Either way, i'm done with a new release. I took to heart what a kind anonymous said and made some changes to the intro and other stuff in the former release and, of course, continued the game.

As i've said before, criticism or just random thoughts on what to improve are a-ok.

Wonderful. I can really feel the YN influence in the art direction and level layout.

I noticed that the areas are brighter this time around, which is nice. The only gripes I have are with grammar (earth is on its knees, not it's!) and with the lack of told controls. Enter and the arrow keys are obvious, but I spent quite awhile trying to figure out how to open up the menu and exit the game P:

very excited to see the finished product. This seems to be coming together very nicely

>> No.7411   [Delete]   [Edit]

>>7377
You are right, it's its!

About the menu, how exactly did you open it? Since i thought i disabled it. I'm only going to use the menu for exiting the game if i add it later.

Out of curiosity, are you the same Owl who started that awesome-looking fangame Merula then disappeared?

>> No.7418   [Delete]   [Edit]

I didn't find the menu. I got to the end of the game, but then started it back up to check something and had to ctrl-alt-del out of it :x

Okay so a bit of a update, i added a pretty ugly looking menu system that i will probably re-do later, with the options of exiting game or checking controls, probably gonna add showing of the controls when you start a new game to, a la YN.
Also, progress being made on stuff, although pretty slowly. Water is a real pain to do.

Another day, another update. At last, you get to leave the ship... for a full 10 seconds.
This game really got a lot longer than i thought it would be when i started.
There was just so much stuff i wanted to add.

The part outside the ship which im starting on next time is supposed to be pretty short, but seeing how the part inside the ship was supposed to be short to i guess i shouldn't say to much.

Anyway, here it is. Do tell me what you think.

>> No.7646   [Delete]   [Edit]

Aw man, just when it was getting good it ends!

The room where you get the red card was frustrating. Also, doors such as the one to the lockers located on the bottom sides of tunnels are impossible to notice. Maybe add a lighted glow to them so they look more like openings?

The music really made this for me.

The intro passage could be tightened up a bit, but it is still really impressive. More importantly, work on adding more to the game!

Some of the doors are closed so adding light from those would be kinda unrealistic, i did what i could to make them clearer though.

Sorry about the abrupt end, hah. I'll be working on it! I got about a month more with basically nothing to do so depending on how long stuff takes this might be all done in that timespan.

I found my aquatic home

This game is so well made

I got to the point where I had to either sink into a dark expanse of water near a giant fish or sneak past a giant tentacle thing that was staring at me

You did not make this game for aquaphobes like me

I actually have a bit of a love-hate relationship to the ocean myself. I guess it's the fear of the unknown or something. Imagine being left in the middle of the ocean. You don't know if there are sharks or dangerous stuff beneath you. You could be swallowed by some beast any second.

On the other hand, the ocean really is beautiful, just look at coral reefs and the colorful fish living there.

Those two feelings is basically what i wanted to convey with the ocean in the game. I can only hope it got through to the player.

>> No.7827   [Delete]   [Edit]

The game keeps crashing right at the start. once i closed a few windows it got a bit further but then it crapped out. I suppose its my computer though but I've tried several times and 'RGSS Player has stopped working' keeps popping up. The last update worked fine though...

Right-click on the Game.exe file on click on Properties. Click on the Compatibility tab, and underneath where it says Compatibility Mode left-click on the checkbox, and make sure it's set to Windows XP (Service Pack 2) or similiar. If that doesn't work, i can't really think of anything but it being a problem with your computer.

>> No.7848   [Delete]   [Edit]

Anon from 7815 here

Just got the water ending today (Does anything happen when you get close to that tentacle thing I don't want to get close oh god I'm not going near that thing).

I must say, this game is incredibly satisfying. It feels a bit short, but the short amount there is is wonderful.

I especially like the contrast with the ocean and the ship. I think I mentioned before how I could really pick out the yume nikki influence with the ship, everything is so alien in a kooky way. There's still that seriousness but an underlying... fun to the strangeness in the design. Then you get to the ocean which is this big green thing, filled with strange creatures and it's still very much alien but it's a calmer strangeness, in contrast to the zaniness of the ship.

The game really is quite beautiful and I wait with bated breath for its completion.

(Also, griping in parenthesis. How does one specimen save the human race? I think maybe a bit of explanation as to how it is planned to reproduce on its own would be nice, it just seems like a bit of a plot hole).

>> No.7854   [Delete]   [Edit]

>>7848
What about asexual reproduction?
If they can remake a human like that, would it be farfetched to think they can make it reproduce asexually?

>> No.7858   [Delete]   [Edit]

>>7848
I've thought about that and i felt that adding other specimens would kinda ruin the mood. Which is why i took one creature over several, even though it does create a bit of a plothole.

Just imagine they can reproduce asexually if it annoys you. Or that humanity will die out when the creature dies, whichever makes you the happiest, hah (remember what is said when you enter your lab the first time).

Edit: Also, thanks alot for the kind words regarding the game. Really appreciate it.

I'm looking forward to this a lot. I'm abstaining from the demos so I can get the full experience from the final product.

Also, Dixon is great. I had read Man After Man way back, and I decided to look him up to see what else he's written. I had no clue he worked on the The Future is Wild (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Future_Is_Wild). That left a huge impression on me when I was a little kid. I'll never forget the Megasquid.

Not quite yet. I decided to remake quite a few of the backgrounds that i had made for the jungle part, since i was unhappy with the way it looked. To be honest i'm contemplating remaking the sprite for the jungle creature too. If you're interested in how it looks now, and have downloaded a old release, take a look at "MainS.png" in the character folder. It would be helpful to hear some thoughts on it too.

Either way, it's going to be a while more.

Alrighty then... So...
The game is done. First of all i'd like to say thanks to everyone on Uboachan. If it weren't for you i probably would have dropped this halfway like i do with most things that take more than a hour.

Anyway, it's been pretty much half a year since i started this, which is way more than i thought it would take at the beginning. Even taking this into consideration, there's probably a lot to polish.
But, and this is pretty impressive for me, at least i finished it.

So, without further rambling, here it is, the completed "After man".

Once again, a big thanks to everyone on Uboachan, i hope you enjoy the game.

Edit: Minor bug fixing.

Well, I'm impressed. I had no idea what to expect, and after being blown away by that intro, then the music...

I do have a few things to say, though. First and foremost, in one of the rooms I remember being able to walk through walls and go outside the boundary of the map. It was the room below the yellow keycard door, connecting to the bridge room. Controls-wise, I'm still used to Yume Nikki so pressing Enter rather than Z for everything is a bit odd, but I'll get used to it. Also minor inconveniences, like being on the bottom of a hall, trying to leave to, and having to go up a block to leave it. Also, grammar. Seeing the word 'im' makes me cringe often. Pretty much what's already been stated.

Love the atmosphere. The exploration of objects is something I like doing in games, so I enjoy checking out all the robots and walls and information on the animals and such.

Currently, I'm trying to get into my lab. There are eggs and I have some keys and I shall find that other way in somehow.

EDIT: Found out the moment I posted. Ehee... Just beat the game in the three ways. First one does have that Satellite error, but changing the name of it fixes it.

At least, I think I beat it. Spoilers, I suppose, but is there anything after the food and home findings? Or lobster claw ending? I'll keep searching I suppose.

Overall definitely a good game. Just needs some tweaks in grammar and things like controls, other than that, I enjoy it a lot.

Thanks for the positive input. It makes me all fuzzy inside. Really.

About some of the grammar mistakes, well shit i missed it not once but twice, shame on me.

And next, the walking through walls, fixed it, just a simple case of forgetting to change tiles.
I also changed the name of the music file. It's weird though, it works perfectly in my game.

And about controls, since the game is made using RPG maker XP the controls are pretty much set in stone, unless i wanna change every single event using scripts. Instead of enter or space, C also works, which i forgot to add in the info on controls (i did just now though). Dunno if that's better but more options won't hurt i guess.

Hopefully fixed version:
