You play as a girl named Irene. Instead of sleeping and going into a dream world, you enter a floor-to-ceiling mirror to go into what I'll call the Otherworld. When you leave your room in the Otherworld, instead of a hub/nexus, there's a single lever that, when pulled, transforms the room into different versions of itself and subsequently opens up more areas to explore, which then open up more, and so on and so on.

As for myself, I happened upon actually playing Yume Nikki and finding Uboachan about a... month ago, I'll say. In the past week I played with the idea of making a game, and in the past few days I've pretty much done a crash course into it and churned out this game.

It's very much in its beginner phase, and there's only one actual world that has the default template I plan on working on. But, there are two effects made and usable and findable in the beginning areas, and I already have plans for many more. (of course those effect locations are simply easy-to-reach test locations)

This game was made mainly for myself, as it will have a lot of places and things based on things from my childhood, things that give me artistic inspiration, etc., including ideas from my little brothers and whoever else I know that could contribute. This means that though some of you may not appreciate it, there will be grimdark places too.

I plan on putting in references to other games (.flow was a huge motivator to make this game) as well.

Now I shall post some screenshots, and then I'll be on my way for the night.

I'd be interested in seeing more and even playing it.
remember to keep in mind that like .flow and YN the gameplay works well because it balances discovery and exploration.

I'm still very interested in this! Any progress?

This looks really good! I'm curious, does the lever cycle through the rooms in a predetermined order, or is it random? Are all the rooms available from the start or do you unlock them?

Two more screenshots for you all:

First is the Hell nexus. Irene's speed-up effect isn't as showy as Madotsuki's or Sabitsuki's. It's a pair of gray and white rollerblades.

As for your questions:

  1. Yes, there's been a lot of progress. Though, I find chipsets tedious to make, so I've designed the maps with the default templates, then I go in and give them their respected chipsets once they're complete.

2.When you activate the lever, it gives you four choices (Positions) to choose from. The lever won't pull if you choose the position it's already in. I could randomize it though, that sounds a bit more fun. The rooms are all available from the start and so are their subsequent hubs. It's inside each hub world where I plan on making more detailed things, such as the "unlock a room/world" you mentioned.

I would love to give you guys the game to test, but I'm not quite sure whether to zip the game file or do the "Create a Gamedisk" thing. (I use Rm2k3 btw)

EDIT: It looks like the zipping option is the right choice, but I'm still unsure. Out of everything, I want to make sure there's as little bugs and problems as possible both with running the game and actually playing it.

Some of you might recognize this effect, some might not. The inspiration to add it came from .flow, but the appearence of it came from one of my most favorite videogames I played as a kid.

The Paradise nexus isn't as showy or detailed as the Hell one, but it still has its own aura about it.

Woah! This is actually pretty nice.
This is one of the first areas I found. great first impression btw. I came across a clock and it teleported me to this maze... from there I went through it until I came until I got to another area via another warp clock that went only up, but I guess it was a dead end.

Found "panda" but you can keep obtaining it after you've got it once.

Thank you very much for the feedback! I wasn't quite sure how people would feel about it. ^ ^

And when I was messing with the effects I didn't quite know how to do that. Thank you and I'll include it in the next update if people can deal with it for that long. :x

All you gotta do is make a new page and where it says "item" and "---held" just check item and select the item. Now nothing will happen if you check the event with the effect.

Hope that helped. (sorry if you already knew this... :x)

Noted. I fixed them, and everything will be smoother in the next update. I think.

Also; There is one more world you can find beyond the apartments. All I can say is to make sure you check everything in every room you have access to, including Irene's room. It's hidden a bit too well, I think @ @

OH AND it's bugged once you reach the main area in the world, you can't leave except by pinching.

There are somethings i noted when trying your game.

>You can walkthrough trees in cemetary world.
>You can walk up the book shelfs in the house in cemetary world.
>The tree's in the snowing moving background place, have white lines around them, also you can see yourself through them.
>In negitive apartment complex, in the room with the path, your head goes under the path.

I thought that the rooms in there should do alot more, not just empty rooms.

Thank you for the fanart, it looks perfect, no need to apologize. :x

As for the glitches:

  1. Fixed tree alignment and you can no longer walk under the tree trunk.
  2. Bookshelves are no longer walkable.
  3. The shadow park trees were made so that players could walk behind them, but for the color to show through, they need to have that outline. I haven't found a way to let the player walk behind the trees without showing their character. Any suggestions? Should they just be blocked off entirely?
  4. That's an attribute of special wall tiles. You can use the same effect for a maze of trees, etc. I wanted it to feel like a tunneled path, but if walls are desirable, I can add them.
  5. There are plans for the empty rooms. I'm just ADD and I jump from working on one world to the next.

Other changes for v0.02: Streamlined accessing the save menu and entering the otherworld. Added an official debug room. Some other worlds and areas are in development.

Have some wtf-am-i-looking-at adult Irene art. I'm aware that she looks like a drug addict, yes. Also my art style is totally not something uboachan would like I guess. bwah.

Second version is out!
Mainly because I finally figured out how to program effects correctly, and was too excited not to update because of that.

I've become a two-person team, my beta-ing friend contributing sound, music and ideas whenever he can. It's still a lot of work, but now that I have a right-hand man, I can get a lot more things done. I just need to man up and conquer those goddamn chipsets.

I'm testing out a new, more traditional way to enter the Mirror World. Give me your thoughts on that and I'll decide whether it should stay or go.

Expect me to eventually post some more artsy fartsies for the game.

Great game, really love the Silent Hill mood it's got in some places. The cellar in the apartment complex is sooo friggin cool, best place in the game so far. It doesn't even need anything to be there, i just loved walking down there.
It would be a great game with only the places with pipes and mesh floor and stuff, although that would probably make it a Silent Hill fangame more than a Yume Nikki one.

If there is anything i have to complain about, it's the footstep sounds in some places. They are to loud, and get annoying after a while.
Also i guess you are gonna do something about this but the flashlight does nothing but change the sprite.
Also found the bug in the picture.

Thank you very much, Silent Hill has always had a huge influence on me, so the game ended up emulating that. :3

As for bugs and things:

  1. I don't keep my computer's volume on very loud so I tended to turn the game volume up so I could hear. But, I corrected the noises to still be audible with normal volume and lower volume, thanks. And I'll do the same for the music volume.
  2. I haven't worked on the hubs themselves in forever and I forgot to remove the coding for that. I did it now. Those doors will change too when they actually have worlds behind them. :x
  3. Oh, and the flashlight does indeed do something, but it's so far only programmed to work in three rooms. It won't work in the pokemon world or the cemetary world, but there ARE those areas I mentioned you can try it out in.
  4. Oh, and there's only four effects findable in this version, including the Crowbar. It doesn't function on npcs yet, but it still triggers special events depending on what you try to hit. And It only works if you're facing up. Dx

In total there are seven, but I only made four findable since the game is coded well enough that all I necessarily have to do is add on more places to put the rest in.

...I guess great minds think alike, I was gonna use the "Attack with weapon to become all bloody" idea... Now that you've used it I'm a bit hesitant to use it myself.

This is pretty awesome so far, loving the new nexus. I'll kinda miss the shifting, but the new one looks alot nicer than the older ones to be honest. Oh, and extra points for the way you enter the mirror.

A tip for future versions: Remove all the stuff related to the RTP that your game use, or even better make it so you don't need the RTP at all to play it. Saves people the trouble of errors if they have the wrong RTP (i did).

Also, you can walk around while checking instructions. And the variables for effects seems a bit off.

To bad you removed the whole lever nexus thing, being original in YN fangames is always a plus in my book, although i do think the new nexus looks nice.
One more thing i would like is a bit more stuff to do or at least interact with, it would really spice the game up, in my opinion. Doesn't have to be much, just that right now most areas are a lot of walking around only. I realise it's a wip so i it might be to much to ask.
Anyway, sweet ride, keep up the good work.

>> No.6818   [Delete]   [Edit]

>>6814
Gave it a quick run through, and I must say, this is pretty good. Specially liked the way you enter the mirror, very Alice-y.

Now, this is my first time playing this game, so I can't tell you much about changes, but I can say there is a bug with the effects. For instance, I found the panda fairly early, and walked around with it for a while until I found the... robot nurse thingy. Cybot, you called it, right? Anyway, I promptly became a robot and tried to do something, but the only thing that happened was the somewhat annoying squeaking of the panda. I figured maybe the squeaking was actually the way to tell players "no can do, bro", so I just carried along as a Cybot. THEN I stumbled upon the flashlight, and equiped it. Okay, all's nice and well, but when I turned it on and off, the squealing of the panda would still continue. Then I tried unequipping the panda, and the noise stopped.

tl;dr you have to make it so every other Effect is unequipped when you equip a new one, or they will both be active at the same time, which, dare I say, is bad.

>> No.6819   [Delete]   [Edit]

>>6815
I changed it to the new nexus mainly because I was dissatisfied with the old ones. As I added more stuff, it made it a lot more tedious to get from place to place, especially when I needed to get to a specific world and it took me a few times to get there.

I know some debugs have portals but my maps shift so much using them would be hard, lol.

Also, from my standpoint, it's all right if you plan on using blood. I had the few things I wanted in mind, and I was determined to make them, whether or not another person did already. Your game is about you, do what you want with it. :)

>>6817
I know, I really liked the idea of the old nexus, but like I said before, it was a problem of convenience. I want my game to be easy to explore. The old version of the nexus made it tedious. Plus I ended up loving the new version and I think I'll stick with it.

And I was pretty sure all of my files were seperate from the RTP?... Oh, wait, I think I use a sound or something from it. I'll make sure to check that out.

And more interactive things are planned in the future, and a lot more worlds too. There's just a lot planned, and I'm going through the game and laying everything out first. I get overwhelmed easily, too. It took me forever to do the crowbar animation, for instance, since I needed two versions and blah blah blah etc.

>>6818
Oh god. It would be wonderful if any of you know how exactly to do effects. I keep screwing them up, especially that damn rollerblades effect, and I have no idea how to fix it even when I look at other fangames for help. I don't quite understand variables yet either, so that's an obvious problem.

It seems like using switches for everything is faulty, but like I said, variables are mysterious to me.

>> No.6820   [Delete]   [Edit]

>>6819
Variables are a lot like switches, except for on and off you have 1,2,3 etc.
http://www.rpgrevolution.com/tutorial/a-beginners%27-guide-to-switches,-variables,-and-conditional-branches_110.html
Follow that link for a pretty useful tutorial on them.

Oh and about the RTP problem, just put the vehicle.png from the RTP in your games CharSet folder and system2c.png in your System2 folder, that's what was missing for me at least. Or, as i said, make it so you dont need the RTP at all. Should be easy to google what you need to do for that.

Here's a few notes on game progression:

Last night I had a huge burst of inspiration and started drawing new chipsets all over the place. Additions will be added to some preexisting maps and entirely brand new ones will be created.

As you can see I'm also adding custom facesets/profile images. Some may not contain just her face though, lol.

There will be a lot more interactive and fun things to do. The majority of all this will be located in Irene's town. This will eventually enable a lot more ways to play the game, and give players the ability to collect special items and such.

As a whole, I want the mirror world to feel more than just an explorable dream. I want it to feel like an actual world with many interactive elements. I'm planning on throwing in more dialogue and such as well. I don't know where this will take the game, but I'm sure when everything is underway, it will be a new and interesting experience.

Tl;Dr The next update will take a very long time, lol.

>> No.6831   [Delete]   [Edit]

>>6825
Keep adding small stuff to do, it's in my opinion what gets a YN fangame from "good" to "great".

Got to the end of the grimdark house

brrrr

Is there anything that happens there after you find the hoodie laying way at the back? I didn't want to go all the way back through that place so I just 9'd out

I feel like the areas in the game are very big, but lack a lot of substance. Someone earlier mentioned balancing exploration versus discovery, you've got exploration down but it feels like there's very little to discover.

The biggest offender of this would be the streets outside the purgatory apartment, where you can spend ages walking and at most see a parking lot and a bed. The underwater area seems bad for this as well. Although I can't be sure I've explored every nook and cranny of those worlds, because it's hard to get your bearings on direction with the lack of landmarks.

I'd include pokemon world in that, but that one is easier to navigate, and I can tell those houses are going to be go-into-able once the game is developed a bit more.

Keep up the good work! Just remember that some areas need a bit more meat to them :x

Does my game have music? Somewhat, yes. I don't understand why you would even ask when you could just see for yourself. No seriously, I'm really curious as to why whether my game has music or not is so important to you. Enough that you had to reiterate your question in such a silly way.

>>7747
The game is undergoing a major rehaul, and is essentially being done over from scratch. A lot of things will change.

I'm glad you found it, most people seem not to know how to get there. Maybe I made that place too obscure to figure out. Anyway, I suggest you find the crowbar effect and head back and interact with the "black thing that is not a hoodie". And don't 9 out of the house when you do. And check the back of the house outside.

In the future I plan on making that place a bit easier to navigate lol.
