Greetings Uboachan!
First i'd like to thank all the game makers of this board for great games, i haven't tried all of them yet but i will.
So, it is time for me to throw my game into the ring.

First, a little backstory. Your "avatar" in the gameworld is actually not the main character of the story. The main character is a girl by the name of Merula, which is the game's name also. Merula have been sleeping nonstop for 3 years for reasons unknown. Her mother have finally started using desperate measures to wake her up. You. You are a psychic specializing in exploring other peoples minds and Merula's mother have given you the task to look inside Merula's mind. And that's pretty much it so far. The game is not yet complete, there are 4 "worlds" to explore and 2 "mimicry's" to obtain. Mimicry is skills that you learn from inhabitants of Merulas mind.
You will need the runtime package for rpg maker XP to play this.

Well, i hope you enjoy this game as much as i have enjoyed others. Here it is:

And this one is of the real world, in Merulas bedroom.

Well first off, YOUR TEXTURING IS AWESOME.

Now that I have that out of the way... YOUR TEXTURING IS AWESOME. The museum area especially is just crazy-detailed. And the music there is really neat, too. Did you compose the music?

Okay okay... so anyway, I like your idea of not actually being the one dreaming. I also like how your "avatar" doesn't have a name or anything, but I get the feeling we'll learn more about her as the game progresses, as well as Murula.

The other thing I enjoyed was the way you enter the dreams, by falling through that abyss sort of place, with the (once again) beautifully-textured background.

Now I need to ask tough questions - what is the overall tone of this game intended to be? Because I get a lot of mixed feelings - some sadness, some serene beauty, some creepiness, and some quirky, funny pars as well (ohai... bunny?). Perhaps a clearer tone wouldn't hurt.

I found one effect, or mimicry, which was the light, and I liked it, but it didn't actually ward off the darkness in the museum. Although I'm assuming you just haven't made that part yet. I couldn't find the second mimicry yet.

I liked that you made me take off my coat. I did it on my own at first, then I went back for it, but she stopped me. hahaha.

And once again, that museum is boss. I can't believe how much detail you put in it.

So... yes. You've got a good foundation. I maintain that it would do well with a clearer tone. But otherwise, neato. Keep at it.

Thanks for the compliments, they really warmed a cold heart, also the music is all composed by me except for one tune actually, which is the title music.

About the random moods in the game, i was thinking that each world would would represent a emotion actually, so when the game is done and you explore one at a time it will feel less random, also as you get deeper in the world the emotion will become more focused.
You probably won't start in the areas i made so far in the complete game, like the haunted house, i was thinking i would make a theme park where you start at the entrance and the haunted house would be somewhere in the middle (the emotion here would be "excitement" or "happiness").

I have been thinking of in what way you enter the worlds, because i dont really like the current way with streams that magically gets you somewhere, i'm kinda open to suggestions here since i can't think of anything good.

The texturing and lighting are fantastic, though I do think it would add a bit if there was a flickering, glowy blue light when "the avatar" equips the light mimic. I love the whole "falling into Merula's mind" scene with the neurons and clouds and stuff in the background, it's almost like she shrinks herself and blasts into Merula's brain to reach her mind.

Yeah a glowing light when you use the mimic is actually already added in the game now, i just didn't have time to do it before i uploaded the game here. Here's a screenshot of it, along with a new area.

I bid you a good day once again, good sirs/madams. I would like to release a new version Merula. This version brings many things. Most of the work went into a new world, and a few branches of it. This version is pretty much double the size of the last one, both in actual size and playtime. 1 more mimic added to, for a total of 3 so far (added ability to leave Merulas mind to). Also i scrapped the idea that each world would have a certain mood. Instead i went for a overall kind of theme. There will be clue's scattered in different places, much like in lcdem actually, except more concrete clues than a floating fetus (no offense to flying fetuses).

Here's some stuff i might include in a future update, it would be one of the creepy areas, i've always been kinda scared of large roads at night so this would be like a large lonesome road (yeah i know it has been done but whatever), with ghosts or something along that line.

Also, any thoughts on the game so far?

I see what you did there.

Also really loving it so far. Found a mimic that isn't light. How do you leave Merula's brain?

Also, I found a flaw with the spider's hole. You can walk on the wall. And, I think the game looks kiiiiiiiiind of strange with such super realistic textures(as orgasmic as they are oh my god this game is so beautiful asdghasdg) but it just seems weird with the characters looking so cartoony. And yeah, there is an area or two(still need to look through everything again) that is a little bit cartoony as well. But the majority of the game is actually pretty hyperrealistic. Do you plan on changing the sprites, with at least a little bit more colorblending to them?

Hehe thanks, i kinda thought the sun was kinda boring, especially for this kind of game.

>>6155
So you found my little surprise!
Glad you like the game, and thanks for the spider hole thingie warning.
You know i've thought about that the sprites in some places seeming to detailed to (i guess that can be a bad thing to sometimes) and i got two options, or well three if you count leaving it as it is. I could as you said make them fuzzier/make less colors/colorblend or whatever that makes it look less realistic, or i could make the characters more detailed, which would probably be problematic in its own way, since its hard making characters more detailed on so little space (32*64 pixels). The option where i make them blend or leave it as it is is probably going to be the way i go. So i dunno, what do you think would be best?

Also, speaking of detailed backgrounds...

Edit: Also the brain area is left via the colored brain thingie, if you action key the green hanging stuff. Guess i'll make that clearer next version.

I would either get rid of that sun or start over with it if I were you. Since it appears in an area more than one screen wide, it would probably be a better idea to use a parallel process-generated picture for the sun instead of a background, so it stays in the same place on the screen regardless of where you are standing, it also wouldn't hurt to give it some glow.

Alright, so like >>6156 pointed out, the gamed does kind of look strange. I have since been working on blending the tilesets a bit and i would like some opinions on which looks best, like it was before (picture in post below this) or like the picture to the left.

Also if it's hard to see the difference, put these files in the "Tilesets" folder and it should be clearer (and try playing the game).
I'd be really thankful if someone could give me their opinion.

... you MIGHT want to stick with the old one.

>> No.6208   [Delete]   [Edit]

Hi-res works better with characters graphics, and overall it's better. Not pixelated like in rm2k (that had it's own charm, tho) but if you make good use of higher resolution, it may look fine. Also, I have one big complain about real world room. It's not real-like. I mean... do you live in a room without furnitude? Look at Urotsuki's room for example. There's lot of stuff. Also you should do something with these walls to make them look more realistic.

I guess i'll stick with the old one then. I dunno is it really hard on the eyes with the textures as they are? Anyway i'll try to keep it in mind not going overboard with the textures in the future, haha.

>>6208
The walls in the house? What's wrong with them, you mean like add cracks?
And about the furniture, yeah i agree. I will probably add furniture and stuff in future updates, as you might have noticed the house isn't complete yet (hallways up is blocked, the door to the right is to).

Heya again, glad to see someone cares about this. I'm working on a update that probably will be done sometime this year (that sounds farther away than it actually is). I got almost all the areas you get to from the falling sequence pretty much worked out, not all of them will be in the update though. Also, starting areas are starting to look like something someone could actually live in, not 100% done yet though. Anyway, that and of course a few more worlds is what i have been doing the last weeks, so look forward to it.

Also, still interested in opinions on what Uboachan thinks could be better in this game, or what you think should be added.

I'm getting a "RGSS102E.dll" missing error.

I guess I need the RPGMaker XP rtp?

>> No.6416   [Delete]   [Edit]

oops, yes I needed it. nvm problem solved.

I am in love with the haunting creatures.

>> No.6419   [Delete]   [Edit]

Yay i got some love for creatures!
Also about the rtp i might make it so you wont need it if there is a way to do it with RPGMaker XP, i saw that it's possible with RM2k/3. Well, it's not exactly my first priority right now so don't expect it.

So anyway i've hit a bit of a dry spell when it comes to this game actually. I guess i have put to much time on this lately. I will probably take a short break until i feel like i have something worthwhile to put into it.

Also im kinda interested, if anyone played the first version and the latest, has the quality gone up or down? Well i guess i shouldn't expect a answer to that one.

I'm having a blast with this game. =) I found the Light and Mushroom effects.

Unfortunately, after exploring around the 'brain' region and leaving back to the real world after grabbing Mushroom, I saved my game and immediately after was hit with this error message, which closed my game.

It does seem like my game was saved successfully before this happened, but now every time I try to reload my game, I get the same error and everything crashes.

I'm a bit rusty with RPG Maker (barely used XP myself), but I opened up the game in my copy of the program and looked up the mentioned Scene_Load script. Line 82 seems to be "$game_player = Marshal.load(file)".

I'm not sure what that exactly does (or how it's broken), and I'm not sure what an EOFError is either.

Can anybody help? I'd love to continue this awesome game. =3

Oof, no, I was an idiot and missed that link entirely. x.x Thank you though, I got that latest version now. Doesn't look like I can use my old save file though, huh? It still gives me the same error with it...

EDIT: Oh my, I am doubly a fool - I didn't realize what a big update you made with this version! I have no trouble replaying from scratch considering all the new content. ^_^

I said a while ago i have made it so that you don't need any RTP or other stuff to play the game. So as of this version, you don't need the runtime package or any other program (except a program to unzip the file). Apart from this there's really not much new in this version, mostly bugfixes that probably no one but me will ever find (like rushing with Dino mimic in the middle of stairs bugging the game up). If you played the latest version you don't need to download this. As i said, this is mainly for anyone who doesn't have the runtime package.

Here's Ver 0.22:
http://www.mediafire.com/?304adexddis0qh0

So yeah, expect more next version.
