So I was looking at all these Yume Nikki fangames, and I realized, none of them capture the sheer terror of the original, some, aren't even scary at all, are there any games out there that come close?

YN wasn't all that scary to be honest.

I think .flow is even creepier that Yume Nikki, but that's probably just my opinion. And... I kinda agree with >>5529. There are scary stuff but not "sheer terror".
Also I don't think every fangame should aim for the same thing as Yume Nikki. Else we would end up with a bunch of identical games. That's what makes me like them so much: they all based themselves on the same game and ended up very different if you compare them.

This. I'm not saying that Yume Nikki wasn't scary. It was to me. But that's the thing that I guess is hard to grasp (and reproduce).

Yume Nikki isn't scary to EVERYONE. Yume Nikki is just full of things that you can make connections to and in the given context, you, as the player, should make the worst connections possible in your head. When I play Yume Nikki, I do remember a lot of unpleasant things from my past, particularly my child-hood. That's the magic of it all.

Or maybe I'm just reading too much into it. HAH.

I wouldn't go as far as saying that Yume Nikki was scary. As mentioned many times, it simply had this disturbing atmosphere. IMO game creators should rather try to enchant every location's mood, making them seem lonely, happy and fun, strange, or scary sometimes (because nightmares normally happen aswell, right?). As far as i like .flow and that creepy atmosphere it has, Yume 2kki is really trying too hard to be creepy, which looks kinda strange, comaring to some fine locations. Trying to imlement some of creator's own dreams into a game would be quite good idea imo. It would make game look more dream-like.

Yume 2kki is not really fun for me anymore.

It's at the point that I can't enter a room without something popping up or chasing me.

That and it's, like, MASSIVE.
