Think you can actually make a decent game? Who's going to play it? What is the point?

Seriously, think about it. You're making a game. So is the next fag. And the next fag. And the fag after that. All these "games" are so similar regardless of their "differences" that no one will want to play your game. They're too busy working on or hyping their game. Wonder why /fg/ is laughed at so much? Well, I'm pointing it out.

Yume Nikki, the terrible game it was, was made by one man, and he didn't even finish it. And it'll still probably be the most interesting out of all of these "games".

I'm not dragging this out any longer. Pull yourselves together and make a collaborative effort, shit, what was hard about that? Throw away your ego, your creation is nothing worth its own unique title. Contibute to something bigger. PROTIP: Offline meeting gauranteed to enhance hype of game.

We've seen how well the collaborative game worked.

I think the best rule of thumb is to just not release anything until there's an actual game there. Not the "hey here's a title screen don't worry it's 0.00.00a there's more to come" thing. Even if it's unfinished, at least there's stuff to do in YN.

come to think of it, /fg/ is pretty crowded with fangames that have too many similar aspects

why won't people make a sidescroller
or a puzzle game
heck why not a dating game haha

Because for some ppl it's not just "making a fan game" but rather taking their own experiences and putting them together and sharing them with fellow Yume Nikki fans.
If you take your OWN dreams and OWN ideas, the game will be very special to you, and if created good enough, the player may even feel the hard work pu into it.

>> No.3851   [Delete]   [Edit]

>>3849
wait, what stops people from being expressive through other types of games?
the yume nikki 'engine' is not the only way something can be deep and special

>> No.3852   [Delete]   [Edit]

>>3851
It is when it comes to dreams!:D
Plus, some ppl (believe it or not) just want to pay tribute to it.
Besides, just several of the newer fangames aren't even using "dreaming" or saving in a diary.

>> No.3853   [Delete]   [Edit]

>>3852
You know, I do see his point. There are other ways this could be done.

A platformer with a yn-effect-theme would be very interesting.

And honestly, even without dreaming and without the diary, you are still playing as a character walking around, finding things to use them on other things and see what happens.

With this sort of genre, there hasn't been much exploration on other means. And a lot of the games do come off as similar, some of them are just blatant recolors that still manage to have just a bit of thier own charm.

This thread has honestly made me reconsider what I am going to do with my game. I already had plans to incorperate more RPG elements into my game than avarage (including sub-plots and battles), and now I am considering adding even more stuff to further differentiate, with the yn-effect-theme possibly being a secondary thing. A storyline can be a nice addition. Yes, it will cut down on speculation room depending on how it's done, but a fangame doesn't have to be a carbon copy with a new character.

:U Now~ I am off to planning out more stuff for my game~ It's story time, bitches <3

WTF Don't agree with him!
Yume Nikki fan games are fun!
If they're good, great! If not, don't hate on the person just cuz they wanna make a game like it!

And besides, how can you put feeling into a side scroller like you could a Yume Nikki fan game?? That makes no sense whatsoever! OP is a fag and I think ppl should make as many friggin fan games as they want!
Even if they're terrible, at least SOME good ones will be released! (Like .flow and Yume Nisshi).

>> No.3897   [Delete]   [Edit]

>>3895

I am not agreeing with OP, I am more agreeing with Lolcrayon's sentiment, that there -could- be more variation amongst the games.

And trust me, if crafted with a caring hand, a side-scrolling platformer can have quite a bit of emotion tied into it. It would honestly be a lot more condusive for the whole "effects" things.

Also, please note that I am not trying to bash any fangames here. I have liked all the ones that I have played here, I haven't come across a bad one or anything. It's just in a fan games nature to be similar to the source.

:3 I honestly feel everyone is doing great work here

>> No.3898   [Delete]   [Edit]

People are only taking the law into their own hands, so to speak. YN hasn't been updated for a while, so people make fan games to prolong the YN experience.

>> No.3899   [Delete]   [Edit]

Not only side-scroller would be innovative. Consider having first-person adventure game, like Exile, or stuff like that. You just click on stuff on the map and things happen. But still i must admit, that YN has it's own charm. For starters, you seriously feel like exploring. Also, using effects makes you to interact more with different stuff, just out of curiosity, and sometimes that curiousity is rewarded. But then again, all these fangames seriously are far too similiar to each other. Idea of dreaming is ok, but at least some major differences in graphics would be nice. But then, i can somehow understand all these game creators. We all have our own dream worlds and perhaps some wish to share it with others. I guess there's nothing bad about it, but then, rather than creating loads of fangames, there could be one, that would compile all these ideas - somewhat like Yume 2kki, but without trying to be forcefully creepy.

>> No.3900   [Delete]   [Edit]

Dear Anonymous OP:

Fuck you. I make what games I want to make, not what games you want to play.

>> No.3902   [Delete]   [Edit]

>>3899

I agree with the first person sentiment.
In all honesty, It may be something I will attempt at some point.

The combination of works, though, I can't forsee working out very well.

Dispite the similarities, I don't think it'd work.
I think there is too much individualism to get /fg/ to turn into another /p/ or 2kki project.

A few of us do go around and try to help to help others, giving them suggestions and whatnot. I know I try to help a bit. D00Dman seems to like trying to give people ideas. But in the end, if you tried to get us all together for a project, I think it would trainwreck. At least, if the project involved trying to combine all of our current ideas. A new project could potentially work.

Regardless, I like /fg/ for what it is. A bunch of people trying to make YN inspired game. Regardless of how close or far off the mark it is... well, that's what it is.

You can take it as a "Lets try to 1-up Kikiyama" board, or you can take it as "I though it might be cool to put my spin on this" board. In many cases, I doubt it's the 1st.

Also, Consider this: This board may be people's first time making a game. This could just be thier virgin thrust into the field, which could lead to them doing different, more interesting things later on.

I say leave people to their devices. Good floats in this instance, Y'know? If something was really bad, it'd sink and end up forgotten.

Wow, that was tl;dr.

>> No.3904   [Delete]   [Edit]

>>3895
you say that sidescrollers can't be expressive but have you ever played "Eversion","Schizo-Phrenzy", "Don't look back"? Heck, "Don't look back" is 8 bit but it's considered one of the most emotional games(by the emotional types of course haha) because it uses the greek story of Orpheus and Eurydice

of course sidescroller was jus an option, there are also escape room type games that also have all sorts of breath taking stories and you use collected items(effects so to speak) to try and escape.

>> No.3907   [Delete]   [Edit]

After I played Yume Nikki I fell in love with games that have you walking around large places. My biggest wish is I could do that outside my house, but unfortunately, in here, if you don't know for sure where you are, you are pretty much in danger..

Anyway, my point is, there isn't much games like these fangames. And I'm not talking about sandbox-type games with huge cities and shit. What's the point of having a huge place to explore when it's all the same?? There are NEVER drastic changes of environment and everything just seems the same.. yes I'm talking about Fallout 3, GTA IV, Red Dead Redemption.

I like these fangames. So shut up OP, there are people here like me who will be playing all of them. If one or two turns out to be a fukken' masterpiece, even better.

>> No.3958   [Delete]   [Edit]

At risk of causing another flood of image macros, I still think the OP makes a good point. It seems like every thread for its particular fangame is full of study hall sketches, vague pipedreams, and every aspect of the plot laid out for all to see and critique ... but not much evidence that there's a game actually being created.

I don't even mind that most of the fangames share similarities with YN like "effects", "dreamworlds", "mental illness", and "the main character is a Madotsuki recolor". I just want to see a game I can actually get something out of, not an incremental release with two rooms, a non-functional flashlight effect, and any possible surprises/plot twists already revealed.

I don't know for sure, but I feel comfortable surmising that the creators of .flow or Neftelia (or even Yume 2kki, for that matter) spend a lot more time actually MAKING their games and a lot less time just talking about it. Just sayin'.

now that you mention it,i think this is the exact problem, people should make threads with their games when they have a good portion of their game finished.
now the counter argument to this will obviously be "but i want constructive criticism to be able to improve my game"
this criticism can come much later, if a good portion of the game is finished, people beta test it and display their opinions

I am dissapoint at myself for not taking this route.

I made a thread right when I started work on the project.

Part of me is considering deleting it and remaking it when it's at a public beta level, the other part just says "let is sink and bump it back up when there is something there"

Either way, I don't think I am going to post in my own thread for a while.

/p/ was a failed project of uboachanners and the persons in charge didn't have as much of a drive for making it.

what OP tried to say, (in a faggy way, of course, but what can you expect, this is a clone of 2ch/4ch) was that there are a lot of game creators here, with imaginative ideas and everyone could pile their ideas together, and instead of making a small game, make a larger game. A larger game could break more news than "just the /fg/ board" rather, it could become just as big, or bigger than yn itself.

Think about it, isn't this how doujin circles are created? A group of people with similar ideas, and a drive to create it. YOU could be the next big team. And if you think bigger...

Possibly become a team for some bigname corp and make money. But that's just my speculation.

tl;dr A VERY nicer way of OP's basic idea.

OP was a brainless fag. You make a point.
Though it's not easy to find a team of people willing to help all the time. Plus some people (such as myself) prefer to work alone, even if it means doing everything by myself.

"/p/ was a failed project of uboachanners and the persons in charge didn't have as much of a drive for making it."

Idea: round up some interested parties and get one person with enough free time to loosely lead the project. Everyone involved takes a little time, maybe a week or two, to create a couple chipsets and/or spritesets. These are distributed to all participants, who take a few weeks to try and make some maps out of what everyone's created.

Then, you can start worrying about the plot and the main character and so on, because you'll already have a bunch of material to link together and construct a story from. A little polish on the maps/graphics/etc. and you'll have yourself something approaching a playable game. None of this "spend a week focusgrouping one minor detail before anything else is created", just start throwing stuff at the wall ... whatever sticks you can refine and build from and the rest just use for inspiration/backup ideas.

The one nice thing about creating a game along the lines of YN is that you don't have to worry that much about things making sense, since the original game really didn't. A shopping mall that's accessible through a hole in the ground even though it has a roof? Brilliant!

I think I understand what OP meant - seriously, there are far too many Yume Nikki-like games on this board. Combining them all into a single one would indeed be the best idea, and all you need is to try to communicate with other game makers.

Isn't Yume2kki a group project, for example? And doesn't it have tons of maps made by different people?

>> No.4029   [Delete]   [Edit]

>>4016 Only one little problem there; Yume 2kki is not that great. And the reason is because there's TOO MUCH in there. They expect you to explore over 280+ maps and find effects when Yume Nikki had 179 exactly and it was BETTER than 2kki. And another thing is that BECAUSE 2kki is coming from the views of so many people, the game isn't a "fangame" more than it is "a bunch of random crap lying around." The game is OK, but it's far too big and just not that same as Yume Nikki.
And besides, there's /p/ so it's not like the idea is unheard of. OP is a fag and need to GTFO.
Oh, and Yume Nikki was as great a game as it was BECAUSE there was one person and one person only working on it. That, to me, gives the game more feeling and makes it deeper.

We already have a group project, and that's gone nowhere since no one wants to work on it. Do you REALLY want to try it again?
I think we should let this thread die. Oh, and stop feeding the troll.

I don't really see how having too much can be bad - in fact, I believe there's still not enough. And I hope Yume 2kki keeps growing more and more.

And well, I don't think anyone expects it to be as good as Yume Nikki, or at least as mysterious as it was... because uh, it's a fan-made game. And because it is a fangame, fans can put as many ideas as they want on it, because they like how things were in the original and would like to see new things on it. Nobody expects you to explore every single pixel of each of the hundreds of maps available, but instead, just like Yume Nikki... I believe they expect you to just stumble across them as you explore. Just remember that finding the effects is not the objective of Yume Nikki.

Or in the words of the wise tanasinn... Don't think, feel. After all, you probably didn't think much when you played Yume Nikki - but instead, you just wanted to see where every warp would lead you to. Unless you were spoiler by everyone.

By the way, guys, you know that the only function of "sage" is not bumping threads, right? It's not some kind of downvote function, and it won't make the thread get deleted faster (unless the moderation deems so).
