Because of an inexplicable loss of data, I have to redo my fangame from scratch. And while I still have my notes and such, this has given me another chance to make a game people will want to play. Firstly, I'll ask:
What art style do you think I should use? There seems to be a discrepancy between whether or not people like the "Yume-Nikki" style.
Basically, should I do it in Yume Nikki style or not? I'd like to hear what you all have to say.
Secondly, the engine.
I can program in RPGM 2003/XP/VX. Which one do you all think is best for something like this?

A bit about the game:
The MC is Alles (pictured left, he has the vest on). Yes, he has an eyepatch. He's a badass like that. (Seriously, it has to do with his backstory). Basically, you wake up in a house and must explore both dream realms and reality to find your missing memory fragments (the effects, called treasures) and escape from your confusing prison.
Each dream realm represents a figment of Alles' imagination or of his past. Subtly, of course.
If anyone had been following the last permutation, yes, I've changed the plot around a bit.
Long story short: Tell me what you think of it, give me feedback, comments, suggestions, yell at me for being a horrible person, whatever.

I did a very quick and dirty touch up job of the room.

One of the big problems is that all of your wood is basically the same color, which makes them blend together and seem flat. Adding shadows beside everything helps a little, but you may want to lighten the color of your furniture while darkening the color of the floor or vice versa. I changed the color of the wood on the sides of the wall to help prop up the 3D feel.

Some of your shadows are going in different directions as well. Determine where your light source(s) is/are coming from and keep your shadows consistent. Their color is also a bit gray and should probably be darker.

If you can add textures to your wood, carpet, walls and so on it really helps bring them to life. I added textures to your carpet, bed and wall to help illustrate my point.

Your room also is not fully 'hemmed in' and the right and left sides seem open with no walls to contain them. I added those walls and made a quick side doorway for the rug leading outside.

WOAH! That's amazing.
I see what you mean about the wood being the same color, and your recoloring really makes it stand out. Also, those textures give such life to the room ;_; especially the wallpaper. I had been wonder forever what to use there, and you may have found it!
I was going to add the border to the outer edges of the room before the release, but the wood color might not have changed.
This is great! This gives me the kind of artistic direction I've been needing! I can't thank you enough.
Do you use photoshop for your texture/lighting placement? I've been using Windows 7 paint (which is actually quite nice, but not good enough to achieve what is being requested).
Anyway, thanks. Although, this may prolong to initial alpha a bit...but I doubt anyone will mind if it will make it a better experience.

I use Paint Shop Pro 7 for all of the graphics that I do. The GIMP is alright as well, and free ... you'll want a program which can use layers, as they're extremely helpful. Here is a link to the portable version if you want to try it before actually installing it.

> Anyway, thanks. Although, this may prolong to initial alpha a bit...

Don't fall into the trap of continually upgrading or tweaking an area, because then you'll never make progress with the rest of your game. I'm extremely guilty of this, but I've been learning to leave an area unpolished for the sake of moving forward.

Oh..I already use GIMP for animations and touchups. I use paint for basic spriting. I was just wondering since you seem to be some kind of graphic designer/artist. Just curious I suppose.

>Don't fall into the trap of continually upgrading or tweaking an area...

Believe me, I know. This isn't the first game I've worked on. I just want things to look decent before I do a release is all. I plan to have all the nexus worlds pretty much done, as well as a lot of the side worlds halfway done.
Maybe I'm just a perfectionist...but I know what you mean. I'm still keeping with my deadline of october 30th, but it may be postponed because of school or other things.

Anyway, update:
-Progress is being made with the treasures, they amuse me to no end.
-Almost done with the room. Reworking it a little to make it more...livable.
-Nexus is mostly done, but might go through a few changes in the near future.

Finally!
1) Make sure you have Japanese language installed on your system.
2) Install Applocale (http://alcahest.perso.sfr.fr/perso/apploc/applocale.html) and all the patches for it (those're on the same site)
3) Install Japanese RTP (http://www.famitsu.com/freegame/rtp/2000_rtp.html) with Applocale (if you installed all the stuff for AppLoc from the step above, you have to just right-click the installer and click "Locale Japanese")
4) Install 7-Zip (http://www.7-zip.org/download.html) - that is kinda vital!
5) Run 7-Zip with Applocale
6) Unzip/unrar your fangame with Applocaled 7-Zip (right-click on 7-Zip.exe, choose "Locale Japanese", then extract your fangame with what you've launched)
7) Download RPG_RT.exe (in case there's none in the fangame package - use http://www.mediafire.com/?mmk32nn2jtm) and put it into your desired fangame directory
8) Run RPG_RT.exe with Applocale
9)You might also need to rename your fangame's folder to some English/numeric name (if your fangame's folder's name is in Japanese/any other language than English)

Actually, for Vista and 7, you just have to run the Applocale installer in "previous windows version" compatibility mode. (It worked for me, at least)

We already have threads for almost all the fangames in existence but there is no general discussion thread.

This one was made for fun like talking about our favorite locations-events-npcs, comparisons, speculations about things we might see in the future etc.

Locations:
Yume 2kki: The theme park, or as I like to call it, the Coney Island Disco Park
.Flow: I love the whole game. I can't pick one particular area out of them all.
LcdDem: The park, the flood plain, trypophobia land.

I've played most of the other fangames but I don't really have much opinion on them.

NPCs
Y2N: Dancing girl, the clowns, and a bunch more I don't know the name of.
.Flow: The Kaibutsu, that underwater mechanic, the (robot?) maids.
LcdDem: Swing Alien. Also even though she doesn't quite count, Chie's mom.

Effects:
Y2N: Small, Bike+Wolf, Spring, Cake, and while not an effect, the 'split in half' deal.
.Flow: Mechanical Limbs, Slime, Arm, Witch, Neon

I picture Sabitsuki having a major ASFR deal going on. In particular, a desire to be at least partially robotic.

well, i've had an idea for a fangame, but haven't gotten anywhere on it on RPGmaker, i already have what she looks like and all. but i was wondering what uboachans thinks about my idea <3~

The game is a about a girl that has dreams (duh) that are based on her only life before her computer was taken away (GASPERZ) which was pretty much otaku/NEET with no outside life except for school (she doesn't attend to :P) so her dreams are filled with animu and shit. possibly might put some fujoshi in <3. and there will be scary stuff, i dunno what. her past life that was filled with OMGZERZ HAWT ACTORZ, GOZZIP GOZZIP, DOZ THIS MINI DRESS MAKE ME LOOK BIG? which with some face changes and scary uneeded music it can be uber duber scary <3~

I know my idea is shit but i've always wanted to make something bigger than a 2 second animation or fail artz. quick idea is quick

hi there uboachan.

since playing yume nikki and seeing the theories about it, i have started making a fan game called STRANGER.

you play as Hakura, trapped in another world and the door is locked. there is a gate that leads you to the nexus which has 5 doors with 5 different people on them. through those doors are 3 other doors. the goal is to collect all of the effects and explore all the people's rooms, which describe their lives. there are 25 effects and once you collect them all the door unlocks and you get back to the real world. and in the end, Hakura meets all the people in a epic montage. :D

the thing is, i have had very little experience in game creating with the switches and such, and i dont know which program i should use. got anything ?

>> No.5552   [Delete]   [Edit]

Since you've got the RPG maker sheet set up, why not use that? Also, the idea sounds pretty interesting. Sort of reminded me of that movie about the people you meet in heaven or something like that.

>> No.5554   [Delete]   [Edit]

Yeah....RPG maker 2000 is pretty simple to use. I'd go with that since you've already got the setup, but that's just me, and I'm lazy. The game idea sounds interesting.

So I was looking at all these Yume Nikki fangames, and I realized, none of them capture the sheer terror of the original, some, aren't even scary at all, are there any games out there that come close?

>>5529
This. I'm not saying that Yume Nikki wasn't scary. It was to me. But that's the thing that I guess is hard to grasp (and reproduce).

Yume Nikki isn't scary to EVERYONE. Yume Nikki is just full of things that you can make connections to and in the given context, you, as the player, should make the worst connections possible in your head. When I play Yume Nikki, I do remember a lot of unpleasant things from my past, particularly my child-hood. That's the magic of it all.

Or maybe I'm just reading too much into it. HAH.

>> No.5536   [Delete]   [Edit]

I wouldn't go as far as saying that Yume Nikki was scary. As mentioned many times, it simply had this disturbing atmosphere. IMO game creators should rather try to enchant every location's mood, making them seem lonely, happy and fun, strange, or scary sometimes (because nightmares normally happen aswell, right?). As far as i like .flow and that creepy atmosphere it has, Yume 2kki is really trying too hard to be creepy, which looks kinda strange, comaring to some fine locations. Trying to imlement some of creator's own dreams into a game would be quite good idea imo. It would make game look more dream-like.

>> No.5537   [Delete]   [Edit]

Yume 2kki is not really fun for me anymore.

It's at the point that I can't enter a room without something popping up or chasing me.

That and it's, like, MASSIVE.

I am in the design stage of my own YN fangame, and just want to share my random thoughts (btw, I'm the lolwut guy)...

  • A big problem with YN-type games is that it can take forever to get to some places. How do you guys feel about some kind of 'warp' effect that can take you to the more out-of-rech place?

This would work by:
1) Obtaining the actual 'warp' effect.
2) Activating an obscure area's 'warp point', if it has one.
Really, I guess this is a souped-up Medamaude.

*Money. Now, it doesn't seem that there's much to do with money if you go to the trouble of obtaining it. Some thoughts:
1) Sodas should have short-term effects. Right now I'm thinking speed boost, like you're character's on a sugar rush.
2) Gachapons! Scattered around the dream worlds will be gachapon machines that will give you a random figurine. There will be different sets to collect: mecha, showgirl, etc. They will be displayed on a shelf in your dream bedroom.

>> No.5516   [Delete]   [Edit]

Actually, some of the things you said (slime, collectables) I was going to have in my game. But, whatever. Sounds good, I like the headless effect with the soundproofing, it would be pretty awesome.
Looking forward to some concept art later down the road...good luck.

>> No.5520   [Delete]   [Edit]

My project have (has? since I may change back to 2003 due to VX being a bitch I don't know if it will still work) a doll collection system that kinda works like that, except you find half of them in random places and the other half would be buyable. And effects would also have a showcase (for example, when you got the loose hair effect a stand with a wig would show up in a room in your house; might be the same room where dolls showed up). I also had a camera effect in mind, but it was just for fun (no event-hunting stuff), and I kinda dropped it because I was too lazy to make more effects. I also planned on making a warp effect, except it transported you to a random location in the map you were. I don't know if I'll still do it...

I actually like those ideas. Headless sounds cool, and it's not that hard to program, since you just need an event with a condition that stops all sounds when you have it equipped. (herpderp eventing nonsense) Spider is a cool concept but it might need a lot programing to work properly... It depends if you're making your game in RPGMaker, though.
Looking forward to it!
