I have some theories concerning .flow.
One really, but it has several parts.
You know that girl that appears after you press a key in the "intro"? No one's ever really made any assumptions or theories about who or what she is or represents, so here's my 2 cents on the issue.
First off, the girl I'm talking about is displayed in picture 1. She all scratched up and deformed, so it's hard to tell, but it's a girl for sure. Some people might say that's some random girl, but being one
of the first things the player sees, I believe she holds much significance then players think. This girl also appears on the beta title screen. The one shown in picture 2. This is like the title screen used
in version 0.01 (ver0.00? the first version) but the one actually USED was an inverted version of this one. This version of the title screen more clearly reveals the girl in the title screen. She also
appears in the title screen currently being used, though she's much less visible and looks more like a face and arms with the clothing and hair blacked out.
I think she's the same girl from picture 1 because they have similar hair and features. Who is this girl?
I think... she's Sabitsuki. but she doesn't LOOK ANYTHING like Sabitsuki, right?
Well, let's think about something for a second. First off, her hair.
The girl's hair from the title screen and intro is down. Sabitsuki's is all messy and unkempt. But who's to say it was always like this?
I think at some point in Sabitsuki's life Sabitsuki became sick with a disease of some sort, causing her hair to discolor. People made fun of her and ignored her cries for help (where the whistle effect comes from?).
She got so tired of humans and their cruel ways that she turned her back on humanity, locking herself in her small, dirty apartment. I think the little girl on the intro screen getting all scratched and deformed upon
pressing a button represents how Sabitsuki was "torn", or "hurt" or how her life was literally destroyed by this new sickness she obtained.
I imagine that when Sabitsuki was young she was a happy, brunette little girl, but as mentioned before when she became sick her hair got discolored. Another thing is her hairstyle. It's all messy, nothing like
the little girl from the title screen and intro. Again, that's not to say her hair has always been like that. I think when Sabitsuki locked herself in she no longer cared what people thought, so she didn't bother to fix, comb,
or even wash her hair, just letting it go wild. She may have also let it go because she thought she was ugly, a monster, an outcast. Notice that on the menu (shown in picture 3) that under "kami" (hair) it says "bedhead", indicating
that isn't Sabitsuki's real hair rather than it just being messed up. So there's a possibility that Sabitsuki's hair was straight and colored at one point.
Her sickness could also be represented by the number of IV's and
hospital-like areas in Sabitsuki's flow world (or rather her own mind). She probably trolls to get back at the humans that betrayed and hurt her, showing little to no remorse and envisioning herself beating them to death
with a pipe. Her sickness could also be interpreted by the little black haired girls in the uterus-themed area (picture 4). The girls might represent cancer, the whistle might be an unheard/unanswered plea for help,
and beating the cancer girl and sitting in the chair in the room you find the whistle in might show how Sabitsuki imagines herself beating and conquering her disease. The ghost and corpse effects might show how Sabitsuki thought she
would eventually die from her sickness. The pipe explaining her anger towards the disease and everyone that made fun of her or put her down. The monoeye is how Sabitsuki views herself; a monster.
Sabitsuki getting killed/dying seems to be a reoccurring theme in .flow, maybe she's suffering and WANTS to die? Watering can.... she used to like flowers and gardening?
Could probably think of more theories of what each effect represents, but I'm sure not every effect means something. Like the cat; I think the producer of .flow just likes cats.
I don't think the broom represents anything either.
Those are my thoughts on this game. It's actually pretty deep... but I think what I said makes the most sense to me.
Thoughts?
